좀: a small word in a request

Use 좀 in a short, context-appropriate request.

Previous and Next let you browse. Save & next records completed practice.

You want a photo at a public viewpoint. Ask the other person rather than assuming they will help. Keep the request brief and accept their answer.

사진 좀 찍어 주세요.

Could you take a photo, please?

물 좀 주세요.

Some water, please.

메뉴 좀 주세요.

The menu, please.

A quick reminder before you practise
주세요: make a simple café order →

Request one or two cups politely using 주세요.

Notice the pattern

좀 can soften a request; it does not always literally mean a small quantity. It does not make every demand appropriate. Tone, relationship and the size of the request still matter. 사진 is photo and 메뉴 is menu. Here the object particle is omitted in a common short request; 사진을 좀 찍어 주세요 is also possible.

Try it yourself

Ask someone to take a photo.

Does 좀 guarantee that any request is polite or appropriate?

Which noun means menu?

Build “Some water, please.”

…

RETRIEVE BEFORE YOU REVEAL

Say it in your own time.

Ask for a menu, then ask someone to take a photo.
