Everyday Korean · one useful step · LESSON 4 / 4

Handle a café conversation

Combine an ability, a limit and a request for help.

Previous and Next let you browse. Save & next records completed practice.

You can read the Korean menu. When the staff member speaks quickly, explain the difficulty and ask them to slow down.

한국어 메뉴를 읽을 수 있어요.

I can read a Korean menu.

잘 못 알아들어요. 천천히 말해 주세요.

I have trouble understanding. Please speak slowly.

A quick reminder before you practise
Use requests in a café →

Choose a request that matches what you need.

Say what you cannot do →

Use 못 or -(으)ㄹ 수 없어요 for an inability or practical limit.

Notice the pattern

You can use two short sentences: explain the problem, then make a specific request. 다시 말해 주세요 asks for repetition. 천천히 말해 주세요 asks for slower speech.

Try it yourself

Which sentence describes reading ability?

You heard the words but they were too fast. Ask for slower speech.

You missed the last sentence. Ask them to say it again.

Build “I can read a Korean menu.”

…

RETRIEVE BEFORE YOU REVEAL

Say it in your own time.

Say you can read the menu, explain your listening difficulty, then ask for slower speech.
